Europe’s most congested cities revealed

Europe’s most gridlocked cities have been revealed, with some motorists losing nearly a week of their lives each year sitting in traffic.

Car insurance experts from Quotezone.co.uk have analysed congestion data and found commuters in Dublin, Bucharest and Istanbul have lost the most time to rush hour traffic.

Dublin commuters face the most traffic in Europe, as they lose a total of 158 hours (6.5 days) due to congestion each year.

On average, it takes motorists nearly 30 minutes to travel a distance of just 10km in the city.

Drivers in Bucharest and London are also experiencing high levels of traffic, both losing over six days per year due to the delays.

Despite attempts to help congestion in London with enforced congestion charges for motorists, it still ranks high for time lost per year at rush hour.

The fourth most congested city in Europe is Milan, where drivers are spending around 137 hours per year in rush hour jams.

Also making the top ten most gridlocked cities are Paris, Athens, Bordeaux, Rome, Wroclaw and Brussels.

Quotezone.co.uk CEO and car insurance expert Greg Wilson said: “It’s frustrating when you start thinking about how many hours you’re spending each year waiting in traffic.  Motorists in Dublin are most impacted by congestion, losing nearly a week being stuck behind the wheel.

“London still remains quite high on the rankings at third. The capital has been actively taking steps to reduce the issue with congestion charges - in an attempt to help clear the pressure on the roads during the busiest times.

“Other European cities are rolling out clean air initiatives and congestion charges in order to try and reduce traffic during rush hours.

“Those living in the top ten most gridlocked cities are wasting between four and six days every year due to traffic jams.

“There must be more steps taken to tackle congestion issues across Europe.

“Not only are drivers wasting their time, they’re also wasting money, even a small car idling in traffic can use up to a litre of petrol in an hour.

“To help save money, drivers should try and plan around busy roads and peak times but that’s often not possible. Car sharing may be a fuel saving option for commuters as well as economical driving – smooth braking, moving into a higher gear sooner and reducing the heat or air conditioning, to help reduce fuel waste and environmental damage.”
