NORBERT NAGY LANDS ZENGŐ WTCR CHANCE

*Hungarian promise gets Cupra TCR drive with established team
*Second Zengő Motorsport driver to be announced this week
*Nagy: “this is the right time for me to start my world career”

The team that turned Norbert Michelisz into a World Touring Car winner has signed his younger Hungarian Norbert Nagy for the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO.

Renowned talent spotter Zengő Motorsport will field Nagy – plus one additional driver to be announced on Wednesday – in WTCR season one, which visits the Hungaroring from 27-29 April.

Nagy, 23, will drive a Cupra TCR during the planned 30-race season and believes his step up to the world stage from the FIA European Touring Car Cup couldn’t have come at a better time.

“I’m very happy to drive against all the legendary racers in WTCR,” said Nagy. “I’ve always said the TCR car is the best car for touring car because we can do some very nice racing. Because of this I always hoped that one day the world series could go with these types of car so we can really fight and now it’s happening, so it’s the best time for me to start my world career.”

Nagy, who placed second in last season’s ETCC standings, admits that while he’ll be racing at several tracks for the first time, he does have experience of some venues. Marrakech will be very different for me but I liked the Vila Real street circuit and was on pole there in the ETCC so I hope Marrakech can be something like that,” Nagy said. “My target will be to reach the points and then I will try to go for a podium later in the season because in the first weekend it will be difficult.”

And on the prospect of competing against Michelisz, who will drive a Hyundai i30 N TCR for BRC Racing Team, Nagy said: “It’s a special thing because Norbi is one of my favourite drivers. I will see what we can do against him.”

Team Principal Zoltán Zengő said: “After eight years in the World Touring Car Championship Zengő Motorsport will continue in the newly born WTCR. We are proud that Norbert Nagy will be one of our drivers. He is a good driver and we are very happy to have signed him. Slowly our puzzle is fitting together and we will answer the question on who our second driver will be this week.”

François Ribeiro, Head of Eurosport Events, the WTCR promoter, said: “Norbert is a promising young driver who will be an asset to the series. We looking forward to watching his career grow.”
