Hyundai Motorsport customer results round-up bulletin

Engstler Hyundai N Liqui Moly Racing Team driver Jean-Karl Vernay continues to lead the FIA WTCR points’ standings after a podium in the second contest at the Race of Portugal in Estoril
i30 N TCR drivers won two of the three TCR UK races on the Brands Hatch Indy Circuit as Lewis Kent extended his advantage in the championship standings thanks to a trio of podiums
Umberto Scandola was fastest on four stages on his way to overall victory on the gravel of the San Marino Rally in his Hyundai Rally Team Italia i20 R5.

Hyundai Elantra N TCR drivers scored podiums in three different series in recent weeks with i30 N TCR teams putting in similarly strong performances to claim wins in TCR Italy and TCR UK competition. Our rallying customers have also enjoyed their share of success with a sensational overall victory on Italian gravel and stage wins in the European Rally Championship among the accolades from their latest outings.

Vernay holds FIA WTCR points’ lead after Portuguese podium

Jean-Karl Vernay holds the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup points’ lead after the Race of Portugal weekend at Estoril (June 26-27). The Frenchman finished second in Race 2, leading a trio of Elantra N TCR drivers in the top five in his Engstler Hyundai N Liqui Moly Racing Team entry. After picking up two points for qualifying fourth Vernay headed BRC Hyundai N LUKOIL Squadra Corse pairing Norbert Michelisz and Gabriele Tarquini who finished third and fourth for their best finishes of the young season.

Tarquini had been fighting for the lead in Race 1 after starting from pole on the partially-reversed grid before a puncture forced him to pit from the fray. The same event saw Target Competition driver Andreas Bäckman collect his first WTCR points for 15^th in his Elantra N TCR.

Dutch Elantra N TCR driver takes first Hyundai podium on home soil

Niels Langeveld scored a first podium of his TCR Europe season with the Elantra N TCR at his home round at Zandvoort (June 18-20). From the front row of the Race 2 grid the Dutchman moved into the early lead, initially ahead of Sebastien Loeb Racing teammate Sami Taoufik. Langeveld, however, would fall to second but held on to take the spot on the rostrum. That finish, combined with a third fourth place in Race 1 gave him the second best score from the weekend and helped move him up to sixth in the points’ standings. He sits one spot behind fellow Elantra N TCR driver Mehdi Bennani – who finished sixth in Race 2 – one position ahead of Taoufik at the chequered flag.

Maťo Homola took points for the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Czech-supported Janík Motorsport team from both events at the track. The Slovakian driver finished 11^th in Race 2 after coming home 13^th in Saturday’s encounter.

i30 N TCR team and driver score first TCR Italy win

Team Aggressive Italia and Kevin Ceccon scored their first win in TCR Italy with their i30 N TCR in Race 2 at Vallelunga (June 26-27). After starting third he held his position through the early part of the contest and then took advantage when his would-be rivals found trouble. He was chased home by Antti Buri in his Target Competition entry to complete a Hyundai 1-2.

Buri also stood on the podium after Race 1 when he finished third. Ceccon finished fourth ahead of Nicola Baldan – who finished fifth in both races – and Igor Stefanovski to put all four i30 N TCR on the grid the top six.

Hyundai USA squad take double podium from IMSA endurance event

The Hyundai USA-backed Bryan Herta Autosport team scored a double podium from the four-hour IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge encounter at Watkins Glen (June 25-26). Four different Hyundai customer teams had spells at the front of the very competitive TCR class during the race, including the CB Motorsports and Van der Steur Racing teams with their Veloster N TCR and the #98 Elantra N TCR shared by Parker Chase and Ryan Norman that would eventually claim second place. The result was their second consecutive podium in the car’s debut year in the championship – following their victory at the previous round.

The podium was completed by the Bryan Herta Autosport Veloster N TCR of Taylor Hagler and Michael Lewis. Having lost time early in the race after being spun into the gravel the duo had to battle, first to avoid falling full lap behind the class leader and then – following a Safety Car period – to climb back up to the order into the major positions. They completed their charge in a frantic final 30 minutes to claim a third podium in four starts.

Despite falling back in the final laps the Van der Steur Racing entry finished fifth. Michael Johnson and Stephen Simpson combined for sixth place in the Veloster N TCR run by Johnson’s eponymous team.

Hyundai customer extends leads atop TCR UK points

Essex & Kent Motorsport’s Lewis Kent extended his lead at the top of the TCR UK championship table after three class podiums on the Brands Hatch Indy Circuit (June 19-20). The i30 N TCR driver took a third place among the TCR runners – and 4^th overall – from a chaotic Race 1, before converting his starting spot on the partially-reversed grid for Race 2 into a second victory of the season.

For Race 3 he would be joined at the front by younger brother – and teammate – Bradley Kent and Maximum Motorsport driver Max Hart. Both had been forced into retirement in Race 1 and so spent Race 2 recovering the ground lost back towards the top of the order. For the finale they were in position to take part – together with Lewis Kent among others – in a fantastic battle over the top five. Marvelously it was Bradley Kent – who had started the weekend’s racing on pole position – who emerged victorious with Hart and Lewis Kent completing an all-i30 N TCR podium to close a very competitive meeting for the series.

Double podium highlights strong Austrian weekend for i30 N TCR teams

A pair of podiums at the Red Bull Ring (June 11-13) persevered Luca Engstler’s advantage in the lead of the early TCR Germany points. Combining his domestic season with the Hyundai Team Engstler squad with his FIA WTCR commitments Engstler qualified on the front row for Race 1, despite carrying the maximum of 60kg Compensation Weight aboard his i30 N TCR, and held that spot throughout. He did the same the following day in Race 2, converting his third place from qualifying into a visit to the lowest step of the podium.

Martin Andersen and Nico Gruber – Engstler’s teammates at the Hyundai Deutschland-backed team – each picked up a fifth place finish. Gruber continues to lead the series’ Junior rankings.

Patrick Sing took his career-best TCR Germany finish in Race 2 by finishing fourth after methodically picking his way through the field from tenth on the grid. Completing a strong weekend for i30 N TCR customers, Robin Jahr started only his second meeting in the series with a sixth place in Race 1 and Jonas Karklys picked up a pair of top ten finishes.

Carville Racing driver takes TCR Russia podium after front row start

Grigory Burlutskiy scored a first podium of the TCR Russia season at the N-Ring (June 19-20) when he converted his front row start into second position in Race 1 of the weekend. His Carville Racing teammate Zakhar Slutskiy completed a strong outing for the team in fourth.

Slutskiy followed up with fifth place in Race 2 of the meeting – chasing home the LUKOIL Racing Team i30 N TCR of Andrey Masslenikov. Masslenikov sits third in the points’ standings as the best of the five Hyundai customers in the field. Ivan Lukashevich lies fifth in the second LUKOIL-backed i30 N TCR. Series rookie Slutskiy’s consistent outing lifted him to sixth.

Polish driver takes TCR Eastern Europe podium on return to series

Polish driver Szymon Jablonski returned to the TCR Easter Europe grid in the BM Racing Team i30 N TCR for the race weekend at Poznan. Despite missing the first two meetings of the season he was immediately on the pace to take third in qualifying – a starting position he used put to good use as he held the position throughout to make a return to the podium. He narrowly missed out making a return visit in Race 2 of the weekend, moving from sixth on the grid to finish fourth.

Three-car Hyundai Racing Canada opens brand new championship with top five finishes

Hyundai Racing Canada fielded a three-car line-up for the first races of the new Sports Car Championship Canada series at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (June 18-20), running one example each of the Elantra N TCR, Veloster N TCR and i30 N TCR for father and sons Bob, Connor and Quinn Attrell. In the first of the two 40-minute races Bob finished as the best of the trio in fifth overall – fourth among a busy TCR contingent on track. Connor duplicated the result in Race 2 at the wheel of the team’s Veloster N TCR. In his racing debut with the Hyundai Quinn took a pair of top tens with the i30 N TCR.

Fantastic overall win for Hyundai Rally Team Italia crew in national championship

Hyundai Rally Team Italia i20 R5 driver Umberto Scandola scored a superb overall victory on the San Marino Rally (June 25-26), where the Italian national championship and gravel championship fields combined. With co-driver Guido D’Amore Scandola won each of the first three stages to establish an overall lead he would only grow over the rest of the event. With great pace – only logging a single time outside of the top two – and the consistency to avoid mistakes he build a 30-second lead before the final stage to record a comfortable victory. The result – their second win of the season in the gravel championship – confirmed their place at the top of those rankings at the half way point of the campaign.

There were also good – but ultimately unrewarded runs – for Giacomo Costenaro and the Hyundai Italia-supported Andrea Crugnola, both of who were forced to retire from the top five positions during the rally.

i20 R5 crews dominate latest Italian WRC round

i20 R5 crews finished first and second in class on Rally di Alba (June 12-13). Continuing their Italian WRC season Luca Rossetti and co-driver Manuel Fenoli were the fastest in class on all-but one of the tarmac event’s nine stages. After setting three overall top times the pair emerged victorious, ahead of a duo running a older Hyundai i20 WRC car. An all-Hyundai overall podium was rounded off by Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing Junior Driver Josh McErlean. The Irishman was incredibly consistent – setting times good enough for the top five in class on each stage and avoiding mistakes.

The five i20 R5 on the rally were completed by Rossetti’s BRC Racing Team teammate ‘Pedro’, McErlean’s fellow PCRS-run driver Pauric Duffy and Stefano Peletto, driving one of the i20 R5 owned by Italian squad Friulmotor.

Slovenian i20 R5 crew dominate latest national event

Rok Turk dominated the Rally Vipavska dolina (June 25-26), winning seven of the weekend’s nine stages in his Hyundai Slovenia-sponsored i20 R5. The defending Slovenian rally champion, Turk stamped his authority on the rally from the very start, going over ten seconds faster than his nearest competitor on the opening run. He extended his advantage through the following kilometres, building a lead of nearly 30 seconds before the final service ahead of the final two tests. A final stage win on the penultimate run bolstered the margin at the top to over 40 seconds for the finish.

The event was the second in busy few weeks for Turk and co-driver Viljem Ošlaj, who also romped to victory by nearly five minutes on the INA Delta Rally (June 11-13) in Croatia after winning every stage on the itinerary.

First overall win comes in style for Turkish customer team

The Turkish GP Garage My Team scored their first overall rally victory with the i20 R5 at Rally Sliven (June 10-12). Driver Mustafa Cakal showed excellent pace throughout the Bulgarian event. After winning the final stage on the opening day he lay second at the overnight halt, before continuing with the promise the following morning. The third fastest time on the opener was enough to put him into an overall lead he consolidated with three consecutive stage victories.

The win also means that he and co-driver Ozgur Akdag sit atop the points of the Balkan Rally Trophy competition.

Stage wins highlight i20 R5 pace on ERC season opener

Craig Breen proved the performance potential of his Team MRF Tyres-run i20 R5 with three stage wins on the final day of the FIA European Rally Championship (ERC) curtain-raiser at Rally Poland (June 18-20). Sadly, though the Irishman’s event had already included retiring on Saturday with suspension damage, so limiting his overall result.

Hyundai Rally Team Italia driver Umberto Scandola was the best of the Hyundai customers in the final results in 13^th overall. Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing Junior Driver Gregoire Munster rebounded from losing more than four minutes following a right-rear puncture and damage on Sunday’s stages to finish 20^th.

In the Polish national championship element of the event Hyundai Racing Poland man Jarosław Szeja finished in sixth position.

Friulmotor runners dominate Italian tarmac event

Friulmotor drivers Filippo Bravi and Claudio de Cecco dominated the Rally Valli della Carnia (June 26-27) in their i20 R5. Bravi won all six of the stages on the tarmac event to secure overall victory by over 30 seconds. Friulmotor patriarch de Cecco came home second after taking the spot on the final test.

Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing Manager Andrew Johns said: “Hyundai Motorsport customers with all of our cars have taken some superb results in the last few weeks. A Hyundai Elantra N TCR driver continues to lead the points’ in the incredibly competitive FIA WTCR series after a Race 2 result that really showed the performance of the car. We’ve also seen the all-round pace of the package in TCR Europe and IMSA competition where the Elantra N TCR shared the podium with the Veloster N TCR. The i30 N TCR too has shown it is more than capable at the top of the TCR order with wins in TCR Italy and TCR UK, as well as podiums in Russia and TCR Germany. Similarly, i20 R5 crews have proven their mettle at the top of both national and international events. In Italy the Hyundai Rally Team Italia team took a superb overall win, while at the top of the European series the i20 R5 customers picked up a trio of stage wins in one of the most competitive series for the category.”
