Maiden win for Mauro-Toni (VSR Lambo) as Leutwiler (PZ OZ Porsche)  reopens overall title fight and secures Am crown

Perfect Race 1 at Monza for the Brazilian duo, who resists in thrilling finale

Leutwiler (3rd) secures Am title and reduces to 3 points the gap in Overall with Koller (VSR Lambo), victim of first-corner incident, ahead of last race tomorrow

Font (Baporo Porsche) takes third overall

1-2 for the Teo Martín McLarens of Vivacqua-De Fulgencio and Salom-Guillem, with local heroes Pisani-Bozzoni (Duell Race Porsche) in third

JP Mauro and Rodolfo Toni at last took a well-deserved first overall win in the GT Cup Open Europe Race 1 at Monza. This time, the Brazilian pair of Vincenzo Sospiri Racing had no hiccups and with a perfect race, beat under the flag, although narrowly, Niki Leutwiler (PZ Oberer Zürichsee Porsche). The Swiss was later demoted to third because of his last-minute move on Jaume Font (Baporo Motorsport), who eventually took 2nd.

Leutwiler, though, put the show, leading in the opening laps and then performing a thrilling final charge, after pit stop and handicap. Moreover, on top of securing the Am title, he reopened the fight for the Overall title, where he now lies only 3 points behind Hans-Peter Koller (VSR Lambo), who fell victim of a contact at first corner, in a black day for some other top contenders, as Solieri, Basso or the Curti brothers

The two Teo Martín McLarens made a 1-2 in Pro-Am, with Thiago Vivacqua-Marc De Fulgencio and Faust Salom-Guillem Pujeu, aheado of the Duell Race Porsche of Eugenio Pisani-Stefano Bozzoni.

THE RACE - After conquering a superb pole by 0.020 seconds, Niki Leutwiler keeps the advantage over JP Mauro at the start, while there are some contacts at first corner beteen vivacqua and Diaz-Varela, who loses some positions, and at the exit of the chicane, between Koller and Lino Curti, with the Swiss (and leader of the standings) having to retire along the track. Also Basso falls victim of that incident.

The Montecarlo Tecno ‘Nanni Galli’ is unfortunately not at the start, because of a technical problem (driveshaft).
Leutwiler is first in initial laps, fending off the attacks of JP Mauro, always very close, with Vivacqua third followed by Font, Curti, Varela and Linossi. In lap 5, it’s the third title contender, Glauco Solieri, who is forced to retire as it stops in the pits with an nengine problem. Nicest fight is for 4th between Font and Curti, but the latter stops in the pits in lap 9. At the same time, Bozzoni spins at Lesmo 2.
The gap between Leutwiler and JP Mauro reduces and at the end of lap 10, in the first chicane, the Brazilian takes the lead with a perfect move. Soon after that opens the window for driver change, with both leading cars coming into the pits in lap 13.
After all changes and handicaps, Toni leads with 8 seconds on Font, 13 on De Fulgencio, 17 on Leutwiler and é8 on the duo Cerqueda-Bontempelli. The second part of the race is quieter but marked by gaps between the first four being eroded steadily. With 5 minutes to the flag, they are basically all together!
The fight is intense, with Leutwiler putting the show, as he passes Vivacqua and one lap later Font, chasing Toni in the last lap but felling 0.7 seconds short of Toni, who holds perfectly well first position. After the race, though, his move on Font, cutting partly the chicane, was penalized and the final positions inverted.
