The Morocco Desert Challenge 2019 starts with a prologue on Saturday, April 13 at Plage Blanche, 400 kilometers south of Agadir. The last few days the 1051 participants arrived in Morocco for the technical and administrative inspection. Unfortunately, even before the start the rally is overshadowed by a human drama. The morning of Saturday 13 April 2019 at around 10 a.m., on his way to the starting place in Plage Blanche, the Dutch participant # 513 Twan Verkooyen was involved in a traffic accident near the city of Tiznit. The Verkooyen racing truck lost control of the wheel and collided head-on with an oncoming car. A passenger of Moroccan origin was fatally injured. The local emergency services arrived immediately on site, but they came too late. The members of Team Verkooyen are shocked by the incident, but are alright.
The organization of the Morocco Desert Challenge expresses its condolences to the family and the relatives of the person concerned. Out of respect, a minute's silence will be held in the first bivouac in Abetteh.
