G-ENERGY TEAM: Sergey Vyazovich holds the lead
STAGE 3 | Neom -> Neom | Date: 07.01.2020 | [GMT +3]
Special stage: 414 km | Total stage distance: 491 km | Liaison: 77 km
Weather conditions: day +21C, night +12C; wind 4 m/s
The third day of the DAKAR rally marathon is a circular route with a start and finish in the city of the future Neom under construction.

City of the future? Yes, it is. Translated into English, Neom means “new future” – a fantastic project to create a “smart city” that is scheduled to open in 2025. Mohammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, announced Neom city project in 2017, and since then, construction has been ongoing; half a billion dollars have already been invested in it.

But the race participants did not pay attention to the local beauties. The next special stage surface nature changes every day – today it has been covered with sand and stones for three quarters of the distance. The DAKAR third stage route took the field to the border of Jordan. This was the most “high-altitude” special stage for the entire rally: the racers fought at an altitude of 1,400 meters above sea level, the track passed through several mountain canyons.

CARS

At today’s special stage, the Car standings participants have fought so fiercely that one wonders if the riders have forgotten that this was only the third stage out of twelve. The leader changed twice during the special stage distance – Carlos Sainz, the X-raid team driver, led the race from the start, but after a third of the day’s distance, Nasser Al-Attiyah, Toyota Gazoo Racing driver, was ahead of him. However, after a hundred and a few kilometers, the Spaniard regained his first position, and the Qatari also let Stephane Peterhansel pass, who is in the same team with Sainz.

But at the very finish of the special stage, the Frenchman rolled back to the seventh position, and allowed Al-Attiyah to rise to the second place. Jakub Przygonski, the first-day loser, rounded out the top three.

Unfortunately, the third special stage was the last for two DAKAR rally favorites. At the very beginning of the stage, Khalid Al Qassimi’s Peugeot buggy made several revolutions. After such an incident, it was impossible to talk about the race continuation – the car was completely destroyed. And on the 284th kilometer of the special stage distance Vladimir VASILYEV’s MINI broke into flame.

There was fumigation in the car, the crew stopped right there, and the car caught fire. Vladimir VASILYEV and his co-driver Vitaliy Yevtyekhov managed to evacuate, taking personal items and documents from the vehicle. Then the Russian-Ukrainian crew was delivered to the nearest judging station with the help of local residents.

According to preliminary data, the fire occurred due to a burst high-pressure pipe in the car fuel system; fuel began to flow freely, falling on the hot surfaces of the engine compartment units. Unfortunately, the vehicle burned out completely; Vladimir VASILYEV and Vitaliy Yevtyekhov were not injured in a racing incident, but it is impossible to talk about the event continuation for the crew…

By the third day results, Carlos Sainz is heading the Car standings of the DAKAR rally marathon – this is the third change of the race leader since its start. Nasser Al-Attiyah is the second five minutes behind the Spaniard; Orlando Terranova is taking the third place.

TRUCKS

The MAZ-SPORTauto team crew led by Sergey VYAZOVICH and supported by Gazpromneft – Lubricants, completed the DAKAR rally marathon third special stage with the second time and, following the three stages results, continues to lead in the Truck standings.

Andrey Karginov from the KAMAZ-master team was the special stage winner on Tuesday. After yesterday’s failure, when the Russian led, but went astray just before the finish, lost time, and became only the third – he has been the leader from start to finish today.
But the standings leader Sergey VYAZOVICH, performing in the bonneted MAZ with the G-Energy logo on board, also spent this day with an ideal pace – the Belarusian racer was the second throughout the race distance and finished five minutes behind Karginov.
It allowed VYAZOVICH to maintain his leadership after three days of the marathon. Karginov is the second a little bit more than two minutes behind the MAZ driver.

Alexander VASILEVSKIY, another MAZ-SPORTauto team representative, completed the third special stage with a sixth result. And Alexey VISHNEVSKY has set the 16th time today.

Failures continue to haunt the KAMAZ-master team crews. Today, Dmitry Sotnikov has caught a large stone at the 60th kilometer of the special stage. As a result, the front axle beam and the transfer case housing were damaged. The crew carried out repairs right on the track, losing more than two hours, but most importantly, they were able to continue the race.

WHAT PARTICIPATNS WILL FIND TOMORROW

The DAKAR rally marathon fourth day route is an approximately equal ratio of sand and rocky legs with gravel sections. Looking at the stage map, it may seem that the route is too straight, but in fact it is not so – navigation will again be difficult, there will be many parallel tracks, as it was earlier at this DAKAR.

QUOTES:

Vladimir Vasilyev, International Master of Motorsports of Russia, the FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies holder, the X-raid G-Energy Team driver, crew No. 317,
“Today, we’ve lost power first: the car has been driving only at low speeds. We moved on and suddenly something began to smoke with the smell of fuel. And there was climb up the dune. We rose, stopped – smoke with fire started. We took out fire extinguishers, began to extinguish. It caught fire below – not the engine, but in the area of spare wheels on the right side. We pulled them out, and it seemed that we tamped down the fire with extinguishers; then carbon burned, there was only one fire extinguisher and we could do nothing…”

Sergey Vyazovich, International Master of Motorsports of the Republic of Belarus, head of the MAZ-SPORTauto team, crew No. 503 driver,
“Today we’ve been in no hurry. We counted on Dmitry Sotnikov’s attack, but he didn’t come to the first special stage finish – Andrey Karginov arrived. We saw that he won a little bit from us. We continued to drive with a free pace because we had a handicap of more than seven minutes. Karginov managed to catch up with us at the end of the second special stage – ten kilometers to the finish line. There was an opportunity to cut well in the left 90-degree turn and he took advantage of it. He signaled, we let him pass. After that we started at the second special stage ten seconds behind him and drove as far as the dust allowed. We’ve been in no hurry. We couldn’t attack Karginov – it seems that the front shock absorbers leaked out, so the pace was fine for us. We’ve retained our leadership in the general classification, so today the task has been completed”.
