Hyundai Motorsport customer results round-up bulletin

  • Iván Ares scored an overall podium at the FIA European Rally Championship finale at the Rally Islas Canarias, and won the Spanish national round at the event
  • Hyundai Slovenia-supported driver Rok Turk is confirmed as Slovenian rally champion for the second consecutive year after the cancellation of the planned final round
  • With a podium on the final weekend of competition Felice Jelmini took third in the final TCR Italy standings from his first full season in the series.

The finale round of the FIA European Rally Championship brought out a total of 11 i20 R5 for Rally Islas Canarias, with a Hyundai España-backed team taking both a superb overall podium and victory in the Spanish national series at the event. Recent weeks also bought the confirmation of a second consecutive title for Hyundai Team Slovenia driver Rok Turk, and a final podium for i30 N TCR team PMA Motorsport in a very competitive TCR Italy campaign.

Podium for Ares leads i20 R5 crews in ERC finale

Hyundai España-supported driver Iván Ares finished an excellent third overall on Rally Islas Canarias (November 26-28) for his first podium in the international series. In tricky conditions, with many stages run in wet conditions, he and co-driver David Vásquez showed great pace to lead overall at the end of the opening day, and complete the rally with two stage wins to their names. They also avoided the type of costly mistakes that ruled out many other crews.

The result also gave them a first win of the season in the Spanish tarmac rally championship as they continued an enviable record of having finished in the top-three in every event in the national series this year. Furthermore, it put them top of the 11 i20 R5 crews on the rally, which bought together the European, Spanish and Canary Island championships.

Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing Junior Driver Callum Devine finished eighth for his third consecutive ERC top-ten. The Irishman tied for the second fastest time on SS15 with fellow Junior Grégoire Munster on a stage when Hyundai customers filled four of the top six, with Ares and Surhayen Pernía fourth and sixth quickest respectively.

Despite the time – one of eight occasions he was amongst the ten fastest drivers – Munster narrowly missed out on claiming the ERC1 crown in his first season with the i20 R5, after losing time in the treacherous conditions of the opening stage after picking up a puncture.

Team MRF Tyres’ Craig Breen finished just outside of the top ten, in eleventh, one spot ahead of Pernía, who missed out on national championship podium by less than two seconds. Closer still was Yeray Lemes in Canary Islands championship – the Hyundai Canarias-backed driver falling to fourth of the series’ competitors on the final stage. Fellow i20 R5 man Antonio Ponce was fifth in the championship at the event.

Hyundai Slovenia crew named champions for second consecutive season

The crew of Rok Turk and Blanka Kacin were awarded the Slovenian national rally championship title after series organisers took the decision to cancel the planned final round of the series amid the worsening coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The confirmation gave the Hyundai Slovenia-backed pair the title for the second consecutive year, and their fourth national championship in total. The duo took maximum points from all three rounds contested during the season. Remarkably, such was their pace with the i20 R5, they won every stage on two of those events in truly dominant performances.

Motocross star leads Hyundai customers on Italian national event

Multiple motocross world champion Toni Cairoli finished sixth overall on his i20 R5 debut at the Tuscan Rewind (November 20-21). In a car run by BRC Racing Team he was regularly among the top ten times on a gravel event where the road conditions proved difficult, taking sixth on the last stage to end a consistent run.

He was joined in the overall top ten by Alessandro Taddei, who finished tenth in his Hyundai Rally Team Italia-prepared i20 R5.

Podium on finale weekend help i30 N TCR driver to third in final standings.

Third place in Race 1 of the series’ finale weekend at Imola (November 20-22) helped i30 N TCR driver Felice Jelmini to third place in the TCR Italy standings at the end of his first season in the championship.

The podium, his sixth of the campaign, came despite losing ground on the opening lap after starting sixth. It also kept him in mathematical contention for the title entering the final race. However, after a good start in which he was part of the group – together with fellow Hyundai driver Igor Stefanovski – pressuring the leader Jelmini’s challenge ended when he span into the gravel trap. Stefanovski would also drop out of the lead battle after being hit by another competitor. Ultimately, it was Target Competition’s Francesca Raffaele who would end the final event as the best Hyundai on track in seventh place.

In the final standings – which were only decided the week after the last race, due to an ongoing appeal from earlier in the season – PMA Motorsport driver Jelmini finished just ten points behind the champion.  Marco Pellegrini claimed fourth in the points, despite a frustrating final weekend in his Target Competition entry.

Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing Operations Leader Andrew Johns said: “Rally Islas Canarias was a very strong weekend for our customers. Having a total of 11 i20 R5 take the start of such a prestigious event is a great credit to the car, and the Customer Racing department as a whole. The performance of the crews on the stages was excellent, especially in difficult conditions. Ares showed his quality to set strong stage times as well as avoid mistakes and took a well-deserved overall podium. We can also celebrate a second title for Hyundai crews in Slovenia after a superb season, and a third position in TCR Italy to close a very competitive campaign for our i30 N TCR customers in the series where three different drivers took victory with Hyundai Motorsport-built cars.”
